Angeliki Damala

The teacher who brought theatre to school

Angeliki Damala returned to teach in Kalamoti in 1936. Alongside lessons came plays and celebrations. These costumes from the school album offer a glimpse of that world. On your walk, look for the primary school beside the marble memorial.

Why is there a room over the lane?

Look up as you pass under a stone vault. In Kalamoti, a lane could run beneath someone’s living quarters. Choose a number on the photograph to see how the houses fitted together.

01Why are the houses so close?

The outer walls of the houses at the edge of Kalamoti formed part of the village’s defences. Inside that ring, builders made use of the space above the lanes. A stone vault could carry a room upstairs and leave the passage open below.

02How did people live inside?

A stone stair led up to the xato, an open-air space that brought light and air into the rooms around it. From here people could reach the flat roof, known in Kalamoti as the vota.

03Is everything you see medieval?

The settlement has a medieval structure, but the 1881 earthquake and later rebuilding changed its appearance. Doors, windows, plaster and repairs belong to different chapters. Let the differences deepen your visit; a façade alone cannot date a house.

KALAMOTI PRIMARY SCHOOL

A school with a place for theatre

In 1936 Angeliki Damala returned to Kalamoti to teach at the school she had attended as a child. With headteacher Georgios Kanarios, she made room for theatre and village celebrations alongside lessons. A year after her return, she helped found the women’s charitable association, the Philoptochos.

Pause in a public lane and follow the stone from one wall to the other. What connects above the street? Compare it with a doorway below. The houses make more sense when you look at them together.

Compare two façades: openings, plaster and repairs. Kalamoti’s present appearance includes rebuilding after the 1881 earthquake. A medieval settlement can carry many later chapters; a photograph alone cannot date every wall.

Notice the change from the village’s enclosed lanes to the open coast. The road south crosses Kalamoti’s cultivated plain: it is a useful reminder that village life connects stone houses, working land and the sea.
