THE STORY BEHIND THIS STOP

Angeliki Damala

Use the memorial beside the primary school as a point of orientation for Angeliki Damala’s teaching and community work. This is a connection with the school; the memorial is not dedicated to her.

Born in Kalamoti, Angeliki Damala returned in 1936 to teach at its primary school. Her local biography describes an educator whose work reached beyond the classroom, into theatre, cultural events and community life.

YOUR VISIT, IN DETAIL

Public memory beside the school

Suggested pause10–15 minutesTime on site, excluding travel

Two things to notice

  1. Begin with the whole marble composition, then choose one detail of the relief. What changes when you look from a little further away?

  2. Read any visible inscription slowly. With children, discuss how a village chooses to remember people and events in a shared place.

Which route includes the memorial?

The wider village loop and the two-village loop include this stop. The short church loop does not; choose a route below to see the memorial in its actual sequence.
