A tower can disappear. Its place still tells a story.
You are visiting the historical location of the former tower. Read it alongside the wider defensive layout; there is no standing tower to enter.
Kalamoti’s exact foundation date is uncertain. Local historical accounts describe an enclosure formed by the outer walls of houses and two entrances: Pano Porta to the east and Kato Porta to the west, with roads leading towards the square. They record four small corner towers that no longer survive and only a small southern remnant of the perimeter wall. Read these as descriptions of the historical system, not a promise of standing gates or an intact castle to visit today.

An architectural detail from the village archive, shown as context for the settlement; it is not an identification of this particular site.
The official Chios guide places the former Varvakas tower at the medieval village square. Treat this as a historical location, not a standing tower open to visitors.
The map searches the village centre, not a surveyed tower footprint. Ask locally to orient yourself around Platsa.
An absent tower, a surviving village centre
Two things to notice
Look at the lanes approaching the square. Think about how a central landmark might have helped people orient themselves in a compact settlement.
Compare the open space here with the narrower passages nearby. The contrast is worth noticing even when the historical structure is no longer visible.
Will I see the Varvakas tower?
No standing tower is presented in this guide. The official Chios tourism account places the former tower at Platsa; this stop helps you understand that lost part of the village.
